Kadeem sparked fire to his blunt and stared at its fiery red tip before pulling from it. He was sitting on the couch, slouched down in the dark. It was around eleven at night, and the block was just as loud and rowdy as it was at eleven this morning. Except, now instead of straight up arguing and fighting, there was a party going on at Keisha’s house a few houses down from his. A party Kadeem had been invited to but had decided to sit out on. Just as he’d done the past few times he was invited to it.

She was celebrating Ace’s birthday, although he had run out of birthdays two years ago. Ace was dead and Kadeem had no interest in celebrating his birthday, knowing he was in the dirt. He didn’t want to stand around, drinking, smoking and laughing with muthafuckas who barely gave a fuck about Ace when he was breathing. A lot of the people in attendance were only out there because Rah had dropped a lot of money on food, weed, and liquor. A move that had a motive behind it. Then again, Rah could have done what he did out of the kindness of his heart, but Kadeem would never look at it like that. To him, it was fuck Rah and everybody out there, Ace’s family included.

Kadeem had a serious chip on his shoulder. It could have been just another level of grief that seemed to cripple him with nothing but anger when this time of year came around. Kadeem and Ace were thick as thieves from the age of five to eighteen, when Ace was sadly gunned down like most of the young black men who grew up in Kingston. He was more like a brother to Kadeem than a best friend. Kadeem didn’t fuck with anybody as tough as he fucked with Ace—not even Savion. They all grew up tight, but Ace was Kadeem’s ace for real. He was the only nigga who truly understood Kadeem. With Ace, Kadeem knew it was love. He didn’t have to worry about Ace backdooring him or doing any flaw shit. Ace was real, real. Kadeem hated he had to live in this cold world without him. Just when Kadeem thought life couldn’t get any worse than it had already been, Ace was shot ten times. Every day, Kadeem thought about how he should’ve been with Ace that night. He thought about how if he was with him, his homie would be there with him. Instead of celebrating in his memory, they would celebrate him in the flesh. Kadeem was sick about it.

His phone buzzed on his chest, and he lifted it to check the caller ID. Seeing that it was Maia, he answered it, instead of ignoring it the way he’d ignored it the last few times. He knew if he ignored her call again, she’d walk her ass down to his house, and he didn’t want that. However, he had been short with Maia since the kiss, and she hadn’t walked down.
